Alpha Phi Omega - Who are we?

Alpha Phi Omega is both USC and the nation's largest co-educational service fraternity with strong foundations in volunteerism and philanthropy. With over 400,000 members and 375 chapters in the United States and various international locations, each chapter thrives on Alpha Phi Omega's three cardinal principles: Leadership, Friendship, and Service. Our purpose as the Alpha Kappa Chapter at USC is to provide growth and understanding of these three principles: to develop leadership, to promote friendship, and to provide service to humanity. While all of us come from different backgrounds, we are united by our genuine love for community service and for each other.

Leadership

From executive board positions, campus outreach to natural representation, the opportunities for leadership development with APO are plentiful.

Friendship

We believe that connecting and communicating with others through service creates strong, longlasting friendships.

Service

Our dedicated volunteers and comprehensive service program set us apart from all other service organizations on campus.

Our Events

Alpha Phi Omega offers a wide variety of events catering to individuals who are interested in either serving the communities around Los Angeles, building friendships through service, or refining leadership skills. We work with a multitude of service organizations throughout the city of Los Angeles so come join us for Recruitment and see what Alpha Phi Omega has to offer you.

Description:

If you love to get in tune with nature, or you love morning hikes, come join us on our Recruitment Hike! The brothers of APO will be taking on the terrain of Eaton Canyon. The hike is very scenic and relaxing, but make sure you put on that sun tan lotion! Dress comfortably, eat a good breakfast, and get ready to trek your way to a beautiful waterfall!

If you’ve been itching for an occasion to dress up, then look no further. APO’s signature special event, Mocktails, is the perfect time for you to look classy and drink delicious (non-alcoholic) drinks. This is the last event that potential recruits and actives will be able to mingle at, so don’t let it go to waste! Dress code is cocktail attire.

Are you a risk-taker? Join the brothers of APO as we play Texas Hold ‘Em and other card games. Gamble until your chips are gone, or gamble until you win them all! The winner will receive a fantastic prize! Did we mention that there’s no buy-in fee? All potential recruits get to play for free. If you’re not into card games, many people will also be playing other fun, interactive games!

If you have tutoring experience or would like to assist in the college admissions process, Kid City Tutoring is the event for you! Children and teens in the greater Los Angeles area oftentimes need help with their college admissions applications as well as various subjects in school, and Kid City tutors provide the resources and means to obtain this help. You can make a difference, and continue to see your mentee develop personally and professionally. Imagine the joy of your mentee being accepted into a four-year institution! Isn’t that a great feeling?

A couple hours of early morning service never hurt anyone, but it sure has helped millions of people across the nation! Join us as we volunteer at the LA Food Bank, you’ll see how sorting apples and oranges can be fun with the right people. Wear close toed shoes!

One of APO’s signature events, MNM consists of volunteers who make different food items (typically PB&J sandwiches) and deliver them to homeless people on Skid Row, one of the most impoverished locations in Los Angeles. The unique aspect of MNM lies in the fact that the interaction between the volunteer and the Skid Row occupant is extremely personal and intimate, and volunteers oftentimes have shifts in perspective and attitude having attended this event. We highly recommend that you make time to attend MNM, you definitely won’t regret it!

Join us for a Scavenger Hunt at the Griffith Observatory! Bring a camera or a camera phone and get ready for an interactive scavenger hunt that will make you wrack your brains out as you race through the Observatory searching for answers and clues!

Come join us at APO’s signature philanthropy event, Kids Explore and Discover at SC! Kids from many different schools in the greater Los Angeles area will be joining us for an afternoon filled with fun, educational, and scientific activities, followed by a scavenger hunt at the California Science Center. Lunch will be provided.

Take the chance to hit the beach before the warm summer months pass you by! Join us for an afternoon of barbeque, icebreakers, and other group activities that will definitely give you a glimpse of the interactions between members of our Chapter! Meet actives and learn about their lives, interests, backgrounds, and identify yourself within our chapter. Spend your day laughing and making lasting memories with the brothers of APO.

Ever take a ride with the Los Angeles Police Department? The LAPD will bring you to a housing project in Watts, Los Angeles where you will get the chance to tutor elementary school kids in one of the most dangerous parts of Los Angeles. This experience is truly once in a lifetime and will change your perspective as you find yourself discovering so much potential in the children of these areas. Plus, the LAPD provides pizza every Tuesday for the kids, and the tutors get a pizza slice, too!

Alpha Phi Omega partners with various volunteer organizations in the Los Angeles County, and we wish to invite you to a evening of insightful stories and speeches directly from the directors of some of our most popular events. Listen to the impacts that our organization has made upon the the homeless of Monday Night Mission, the kids of Jordan Downs Tutoring, and the teenagers of Kid City Tutoring. Reach out to active members and volunteer organizations to learn more about which service events you would like to get involved in and learn how Alpha Phi Omega can make that happen for you. Food and drinks will also be provided.

Do you love kids? Can’t get enough of them? IMPACTO is an after school program where children from local Los Angeles elementary schools gather together for an afternoon of food, art projects, events, and fun! Be a part of their never-ending excitement and enthusiasm as these children surround you in the most affectionate ways, inviting you to join them in their playground games.

Poodles, pugs, labs, and corgis….the list goes on! We are volunteering with a local Los Angeles dog rescue and pairing up with Angel City Brewery to hold a parking lot dog wash! Come out and see some of the cutest dogs you will ever meet, enjoy an afternoon of puppy love, and end the day with a smile that you won’t be able to wipe off your face! You’ll be begging to stay and the dogs will be whining as you leave. This is one of our newest events, so make sure to join us in welcoming this new service opportunity! Note: This event is held at Angel City Brewery, but any alcoholic beverage consumption under Alpha Phi Omega is strictly prohibited.

Hobbies: Weight training, Golf, Basketball, Volleyball, Exploring, EATING!!!!
Favorite Service Events: GWHFC and Jordan Downs Mentoring

I have been part of Alpha Phi Omega since my freshman year, and I have loved every single moment in this organization. APO has given me so many opportunities to take on leadership positions within the org. These experiences develop my leadership, management, and communication skills, which translated into my academics and work. Through the various service events APO provides, I have also gained a different perspective on the world, which has kept me grounded. Most importantly, I found friends/brothers in APO who would have my back no matter what. I am so grateful to be part of this family, and I am so excited to host USC APO’s Fall 2016 Recruitment. Don’t be shy, and come say “Hi” to me. I look forward to meeting you all at our recruitment events!

Hobbies: Cooking and Baking, Exploring new places, Binge watching Netflix, Going to Giants and Warriors games
Favorite Service Events: Fur Baby Rescue and 32nd Street Tutoring

This semester marks my one-year anniversary in APO. I joined because I wanted to meet people outside of my major, of all different backgrounds, who shared the same passion for community service. APO gave me the opportunity to get off campus and explore LA (everyone is a foodie, so that was a plus too). My favorite APO memory was decking out in USC gear and invading the In N Out in Westwood. I plan on moving to San Francisco after graduation. Come say Hi to me at recruitment events! Looking forward to meeting you all!

Alpha Phi Omega is an organization where I can pursue and achieve my goals alongside other motivated individuals. Not only does it allow me to grow as a leader and fulfill my passion for community service, APO has also given me a second family here at USC. I know that I have developed meaningful and lifelong relationships with people I can always count on. Whether it be cramming for an exam or going out to explore LA, I would be taking on these experiences with my fellow brothers in APO. As a result, I can confidently say that rushing APO has been one of the best decisions I have made in college.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of APO is passion. It is hard to find a member of our chapter who is not extremely passionate about something. Whether it's medicine, sports, fashion, music, art, or anything else in between, everyone in APO is driven to pursue what they love. This, along with the amazing friends I have made, is what has helped me stay involved three years after pledging. It's an amazing feeling to be apart of a community that is incredibly driven and is continuously being replenished with passionate individuals.
